Red, White and Blueberry Trifle

A heavenly mixed berry trifle made with summer fresh blueberries, strawberries, white chocolate pudding, angle foods cake and cream. A beautiful guiltless dessert that would make your July 4th table proud.

I gave some of this to my dessert-loving brother and he raved about it and told me to make sure I let you all know how fabulous this is. He's right, this exceeded my expectations and I probably ate more than I should have, oops!

Using store bought angel foods cake makes this quick and easy to prepare and no need to heat up the kitchen, but you can use a box mix or make it from scratch if you prefer, whatever you decide this will still be fabulous!

Red, White and Blueberry Trifle

Servings: 14 • Serving Size: 1 cup  Old Points: 3 pts Points+: 4 pts
Calories: 169.1 • Fat: 0.4 g Protein: 2.5 g Carb: 38 g Fiber: 3.0 g Sugar: 16.5 g

Sodium: 102.8 mg

Ingredients:
  • 10 oz angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes*
  • 2 pints strawberries, sliced
  • 2 pints blueberries

For the cream filling:
  • 6 tbsp fat-free sweetened condensed milk (I used Borden Eagle)
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 package sugar-free white chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 12 oz fat-free frozen whipped topping, thawed

Directions:

Whisk the condensed milk and water in a bowl. Whisk in the pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes or until soft-set; fold in the whipped topping.

Arrange half of the cake in the bottom of a 14-cup trifle dish. Sprinkle evenly with a layer of blueberries. Spread half of the cream mixture over the blueberries and gently spread (I piped it using a plastic bag and cut the corner off). Top with a layer of strawberries. Layer the remaining cake cubes on top of the strawberries, then add more blueberries and top with the remaining cream mixture. Finish with the remaining strawberries and blueberries, arranging them in a pretty pattern. Cover and refrigerate at least one 1 hour.

*I only used 10 oz of a 16 oz cake.

  1. This looks amazing. But, I am curious why it looks so white if there is there is chocolate pudding in the filling? Maybe it is just my computer. I will try this this summer!

I'm not sure how the points change with regular pudding, I would guess it may add a point.

  10. Looks beautiful! Is the fat-free condensed milk also known as fat-free evaporated milk? Or are you referencing sweetened condensed milk?
    Thanks for the clarification!

    1. Eagle Brand has regular, low fat, or fat-free condensed milk. Don't use evaporated.

  16. Wow this looks wonderful! Sweet condensed milk also comes in fat free, it is not evaporated milk so dont make that mistake. Condensed milk is very thick. It is found on the baking isle.
This looks beautiful, light and refreshing, I cannot wait to try it!

  17. Christina, a trifle dish is a clear dish that sits on a pedistal. If you have a local walmart they have them for $7-10. You can use any clear dish that has depth. The beauty of this dessert is the layers so you need something you can see through. If you do not care to see the layers you could use any large container.

  18. The fat-free sugar-free white chocolate pudding is VERY good!! The milk Gina is talking about is fat-free sweetened condensed milk. When I make a trifle, I use about 1/4 cup less milk than the recipe calls for. I use skim milk for half the milk and fat-free half and half for the rest of the milk. It is thick and creamy!

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is AS tasty as it is PRETTY so I hope you all make this!!

Christina, as someone mentioned a trifle dish is a must so you can see the layers. You should be able to find them wherever they sell kitchen gadgets.

It Is What It Is- I will come over and cut your strawberries! :)

They sell fat free sweetened condensed milk in a can, Borden sells on, so does Carnation.

J Beaman - yes it really is delicious!! So glad I tried it!

  20. I make various versions of this...sometimes I only use fruit, mo cake or pudding and serve with whipped cream on the side BUT I buy cheap trifle bowls at Ikea or Christmas Tree Shop and bring them when I go to friends house for a BBQ and let them keep the bowl as a gift.

  45. amybart - yes I guess I am a guinea pig!!

Anonymous- I've had those spoons so long I can't remember where I got them.

Susan D - I personally used a measuring cup to serve since I wanted to see how many cups it made, but any large spoon should work.

  46. I've made a dessert just like this twice in the last few months. I add raspberries when I make it to make it extra berry-y. I was making it from memory and forgot about doing pudding between the layers -- I was just using FF Cool Whip. It's a very satisfying dessert without a ridiculous amount of calories, esp. when you use FF/sugar free ingredients. Yum!

  47. I looove trifles- they are so easy but always tasty and a big hit because they just look so fantastic. This is a great combo!

  50. For the people asking about the condensed milk.... I just have to say that I am too cheap to pay for that (over $2 a can at my local store) and you don't really need the extra sugar as there is plenty of sweetness already in the cake, the pudding and the whipped cream. I made this using 1 1/2c fat free milk instead of water, leaving out the condensed milk completely, and it turned out great!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I will be adding the to my July 4th menu! Thanks for sharing.

Not one single blueberry was left in the bowl. Easy to find the FF sweetened condensed milk at my local grocery store. It was about double the price though. With about half the can left over, I will make another batch of this delicious dessert this week. Maybe my husband will get some this time!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Gina...I'm making this for my party tonight. How far in advance can I assemble this so it doesn't turn to mush?

    ReplyDelete
  69. So glad this was a hit, I knoew it would be!!

You may want to assemble it without adding the top layer of fruit until you are closer to the party. It won't turn to mush, but you want the fruit on top to look fresh. Enjoy!

Thanks for this website Gina. I am HOOKED!

I am fascinated with this site and always looking for what you will come up with next. I just made this dessert for my nephews birthday party and it was a bigger hit than the birthday cake. 115. I just wanted to say that I have made so many of your recipes it's like you live in my house with me. That might seem a little creepy, but it's true!
I know it's gross and against all the rules but I was really feeling the need for berries lately even though it's December and I totally made this recipe with frozen berries. It was not as good, I'm sure, but it fed my berry needs and made my family very happy!

    ReplyDelete
  116. hello im new to your website...i have made a brownie trifle before and it asked for sweetened condensed milk and in my opinion and familys and was wayyyy to sweet. would it completely change the taste if i use regular milk? would it not be sweet enough or thick enough if i left the sweetened condensed milk out? thank you for your beautiful recipes!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. This isn't overly sweet but you could just leave it out.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Gina, any ideas on how to make this delicious dessert festive for the holidays!!!

  120. This looks awesome. Is there anything that can be substituted for the pudding mix? It contains petroleum-based food dyes and I avoid those. Love your recipes. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  121. O.k. so this looks so yummy but if I made it fat free and suger free my husband might kill me (trust me he can tell lol) so can you use the not so healthy stuff instead or will it come out different other than not as healthy?

    1. You can use regular ingrediants. I sprinkled my strawberries with sugar and let them soak for a bit. I used regular cool whip without mixing it with anything. When you start layering, put your strawberries on top of the angel food cake so the cake absorbs the juice. Lovely!

  122. My Mum has been making a variation of this for years. It was always my favorite during summer bbq's. She always used vanilla pudding, but I'm going to show her this recipe with the white chocolate. I bet that makes it fantastic. Another variation is banana pudding with cut up strawberries and bananas.

  127. My Son in Law made this for us on Mother's Day...there was nothing left. It was sooo delicious and refreshing. Being a WW member, it was guilt free eating!!!

  128. I made this last night for a mothers day dinner.....AMAZING! I usually leave any leftover desserts with my sis or mom but not last night buddy, i took it home and can't wait to finish it off tonight!! I couldn't find white chocolate pudding so I used cheesecake instead. I'm sure it would be good with the other but i loved the cheesecake so well i'm not sure i can make the switch. I used blackberries and raspberries also. I'm new to WW and it's so nice to think that something that taste this good can actually be okay to eat.....I know I can keep doing this.

LOVE this site!!! Every meal this week has come from your recipes and I couldn't be happier or more inspired. Been on WW for almost 4 weeks and lost 15 pounds so far. This is actually fun!

  129. Was wondering if I could sub the cool whip for homeade whipped cream, I just hate the flavor of cool whip! How many cups would I want to use?
    Thanks in advance

  130. Made it tonight for dinner tomorrow. Easy to make especially since I really don't cook too often. Thanks for all the comments. They helped!

  132. Made it for a party, mine wasn't as pretty as Gina's but it sure tasted good! Made a few changes, my strawberries and blueberries weren't the most ripe so I made a simple syrup a few of the berries (was too chicken to use Splenda so I used regular sugar :/ ) I too wasn't able to find fat free condensed milk so i used regular. Used fat free everything else and substituted half the water for fat free half and half. LOVED the white chocolate- That was genius Gina!
So my version wasn't quite as WW friendly, will continue to search for the FF condensed milk and hopefully next time my berries will be sweeter!

Thanks Gina! This made the dinner party awesome!

  133. Went to 4 stores, couldn't find the white chocolate pudding anywhere. Bought cheesecake pudding instead, hoping it turns out good. It was either cheesecake or vanilla. Thought cheesecake might be better.

  134. made this for memorial day for out bbq. It was a huge hit. Everyone loved it even the kids liked it. My in-laws even decided to eat dessert first because they wanted to try it. Thanks so much for sharing

  136. I made this for our Memorial Day bbq and it was a huge hit! I didn't have enough blueberries, so I used blackberries for the first layer. I wasn't able to find the white chocolate pudding, so like alot of folks I used cheesecake flavor. We all loved it, and the family has already requested I make it again this week!

  137. I made this for our Memorail Day BBQ. It was wonderful. The pudding mix was a little runny, so I am not sure if I did something wrong. Either way it was gone!

  138. My sister & I make this dessert, but we use only Whipped topping...not the pudding. It's good that way, too. Since I am diabetic, I can use sugar free cake and sugar free whipped topping.

  139. My sister made something like this about a month ago but with just pain whip cream. It was good, but not WOW. I made a double recipe and served this one today at a BBQ for our friends and people fought over the left overs! The white choc in the whip cream makes all the difference, gr8 low cal tip. thanks!

  140. Hi Gina -Do you think it could refrigerate overnight or will it get too soggy?

    ReplyDelete
  141. What size pudding mix do you use?

  142. I had the pleasure of eating this at a BBQ yesterday, and immediately asked for the recipe. The taste was amazing, and the dish was beautiful.

  143. Anyone knows what she means by "Fold in the whipped topping" part of the recipe? I'm confused about that part.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Folding in is not like stirring it together. You take a spoon or spatula and scrape from the bottom of the bowl and fold the pudding up over the top of the whipped cream and keep doing this until it's all combined. Stirring whipped cream breaks it down and it looses it's air and then isn't 'fluffy' anymore. Hope this helps and makes sense.

  151. Question-Crazy question maybe but, do we actually mix the pudding according to the package first then the water and condensed milk?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous, don't make the pudding according to the package, instead whisk the water and condensed milk then add the pudding. After letting it set fold in the Cool Whip. Hope this helps.

      Delete
  152. @ anonymous no just the water condensed milk and pudding get mixed together if you made it the way the box says then add the other it would completly change the points!

  153. As I was making this yesterday for a bbq we were going to my husband saw all the non-fat ingredients and was complaining that it would be "non-taste." Made him try it and he went back for seconds! Very good and very easy to make.

This is absolutely the yummiest, lowest points value trifle I have ever made. Made it first for a 4th of July cookout, and then again for the family over the weekend due to popular demand. Just a tip...you can add fresh raspberries to this to make it even more colorful if you would like. Thanks for sharing! ;-)

  158. What size pudding mix?

    ReplyDelete
  159. We recently moved into a new home. I made this trifle and then invited the neighbors over for dessert. They said it was the best 'meet the neigbours' they'd ever had. So easy and delish. Thanks!

  160. I made this over 4th of July as written and am going to make it for an Olympic Opening Ceremony party tonight. This time I think I'm going to try a lemon pudding if I can find it to add to the lightness and freshness ;-) Love your site, Gina. I can't even count how many of your recipes I've made!!!

  161. We made this yesterday for the 2nd time. It's our favoite dessert. and we don't have to feel too guilty eating it. It's so easy to make and so good, I could eat the whole thing by myself. But I do refrain....

  162. Made this for dessert tonight, but my local grocery store did not have white chocolate pudding in the sugar free option so I subbed sugar free cheesecake pudding. So good!!!

  163. I made this for dinner the other night when we had friends over. It was a huge hit! My guests even had seconds! I also had trouble finding the White Chocolate pudding, so I opted for the Sugar free Cheesecake pudding and it did the trick perfectly. Fantastic recipe!

  164. I made this for my sons 4th of July BBQ and it was a HUGE hit!

Whenever I ask "what can I bring?" to a party or BBQ, I am TOLD to bring this desert. I'm also making this tonight just because my son and daughter in law love it so much.

The store I was at didn't have white chocolate pudding, so I am going to try it with vanilla.

  165. any suggestions on what to do with the leftover condensed milk?

    ReplyDelete
  166. I made this yesterday. I love it. I make my banana puddings with the same filling just use bananas and cookies instead so I knew it would be good. I couldn't find the angel food cake at the store I was at so I just bought the cake mix and made the cake. you only have to add water to the cake mix. Also, I used all strawberries because I'm not a big fan of blueberries. One cup serving is very fulfilling and plenty. Can't believe it's so guiltless.

  167. I just made this tonight, I tasted it in July at an office party and was directed to this website for the recipe. Unfortunately mine didn't turn out well. It was "soupy", after I spooned out one portion the remainder caved in. It didn't taste as fluffy as when I had it the first time. I followed the recipe accurately and wonder if you have any suggestions on what I may have done wrong? Luckily this was my practice trifle and I need to bring one to an event next week on 10/30/12. HELP please.

  171. This was a hit at the 4th of July party I went to yesterday. I did take the first bite bc 5 min later it was all gone. If I had made 2 they both would of been gone fast!!! Thanks Gina, you are my go to site and I recommend your site to all my patients looking for healthier recipes.

  172. Thank YOU! I made this for 4th of July and there wasn't anything left! I had to substitute cheesecake pudding because I couldn't find white chocolate pudding in my area. But it was AMAZING anyway. And so pretty!!! Thank YOU again.

  173. Was able to pick up a great trifle dish at Target which made the presentation of this dish epic. A couple of items, I definitely agree using a big ziploc with a corner cut out helps with the cream. Pay attention to the placement of the ingredients, by placing them against the bowl so they can be seen. The trifle was a hit at the July 4th party, although I did get to bring some home, there were several desserts available,(including your red/white/blue skewers!) none were finished. Definitely keep refrigerator until time to serve. Excellent dessert to feed a hungry group of folks. Thanks again Gina!

  174. I don't have a trifle bowl, so I found some cool margarita glasses and made individual servings of it. I made 5 very full glasses (skipping one level of fruit as it wouldn't have fit), and I had some extra of the pudding/cool whip mixture, so I am guessing I could have made 7 or 8 maybe if I'd used it all. So good, and my husband ate one the next day and said it was just as good!
